My scholarly and research interests broadly address infectious diseases epidemiology, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship in high-risk patient populations, such as those with chronic disabilities. Much of my work incorporates innovative and cross disciplinary approaches such as mixed methods and qualitative research. I recently completed a VA Rehabilitation Research & Development Career Development Award. Through this mixed methods project, I identified a high frequency of inappropriate diagnosis and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Veterans with neurogenic bladder (NB), identified key patient knowledge gaps about ASB and UTI, and characterized the influence of caregivers, providers, and the healthcare environment on patient behavior about UTIs. I also identified significant UTI impacts on quality of life and other patient-reported outcomes. I am currently leading a project to validate a new patient-reported outcome tool to measure quality of life impacts from UTIs. Using this preliminary work, my future goal is to test a multimodal antibiotic stewardship intervention to optimize UTI diagnosis and treatment in Veterans with NB using innovative patient- and provider-centered strategies tailored to the NB patient population and targeting outpatient care.
