I have been conducting health services research for over 30 years.  I am the Director of the Division of Population Health in the Department of Psychiatry at University of Washington, and a Co-Director of the Team Science Cores of the NIMH-funded P50 Suicide Care Research Center and NIMH-funded P50 Alacrity Center.  I am also a Senior Research Career Scientist and Core Investigator at the VA HSR Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care (COIN), and Corresponding Principal Investigator of the VA Virtual Care QUERI Program (2015-2030).

My research focuses on improving access to and engagement in care, including interventions that virtually integrate services for mental health and substance use disorders into primary care clinics, especially rural primary care. I have been the Principal Investigator on 18 VA- NIH- and PCORI-funded research projects, including both pragmatic trials and hybrid effectiveness-implementation trials.  I have been the Director or Co-Director of the PhD Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the Seattle VA HSR COIN since 2016, and have been the Director or Co-Director of the NIH-funded T32 Fellowship in Integrated Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Washington since 2019.  In the past 10 years, I have been the primary mentor for 9 postdoctoral fellows, 6 of whom received an NIH or VA grant, and have continued on in research careers.  In the past 10 years, I have also been the primary mentor for 8 junior faculty members, 6 of whom have received an NIH or VA grant. In 2022, I received the Wayne J Katon Outstanding Research Mentor Award in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Washington.
