Dr. Heather Gilmartin, PhD, NP, is a Research Health Scientist at the Seattle/Denver Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value-Driven Care, part of the Rocky Mountain Regional Veteran Health Administration (VA) Medical Center. She is the Associate Director of the Denver site of the VA Seattle/Denver Center of Innovation and co-directs the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Health Systems Research. She holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at the Colorado School of Public Health, within the Department of Health Systems, Management & Policy. Additionally, Dr. Gilmartin serves as the Associate Director of the Dissemination & Implementation Research Core at the Colorado Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.
Dr. Gilmartin's research aims to improve healthcare culture by fostering workforce stability, employee well-being, and high-quality patient care. She achieves this through the promotion of organizational learning and the implementation of high-reliability practices, such as team training, mindfulness, leadership coaching, and relational coordination. Dr. Gilmartin is an Associate Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation, specializing in executive leadership coaching for VA clinical leaders through the National Center for Organization Development.
A notable achievement in Dr. Gilmartin's career is the invention of the Relational Playbook for Healthcare Teams, a patented tool designed to enhance team dynamics and leadership in clinical settings. This innovative program has demonstrated significant improvements in team turnover, well-being, and clinical efficiency, particularly in VA cardiac catheterization laboratories, rural hospital medicine teams, and among Advanced Practice Providers at an academic medical center. Dr. Gilmartin's contributions continue to advance the field of healthcare by driving improvements in organizational learning and team performance.
