I have a broad background in epidemiology, and have gained expertise in using VA administrative data, the design and conduct of randomized trials, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, and qualitative research. Since 2009, much of my research has focused on studying modifiable risk factors in small, marginalized populations. In 2015, I completed a 5-year Rehabilitation R&D Career Development Award-2 in health promotion in people with lower extremity amputation. I have also conducted research and evaluation related to rural health and health disparities. Key themes of my research include a focus on preventative behaviors and interventions to prevent chronic illness and complications of chronic illness. This work began with studies of physical activity in the general population and in Veterans and continued in people with lower extremity limb loss. Another important theme is my willingness to learn and employ methods that will best answer questions of interest. Thus, in my career, I have experience with interviewer-administered and self-administered questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, longitudinal cohort studies, and randomized trials.
