- See Dr. Ho's Dimensions profile that includes: publications, grants, datasets, patents and clinical trials
- Dr. Ho is Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado and cardiologist at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. He was an HSR Career Development Awardee (CDA) and has been an active investigator within the Denver HSR Center since 2004. Dr. Ho co-directs the Seattle-Denver Center of Innovation for Veteran-Centered and Value Driven Care along with David Au, MD.
- His research has focused on medication adherence and interventions to improve medication adherence. More recently, his research has focused on value in healthcare and creating learning health systems to improve the value of health care delivered to patients. He co-leads the VA Collaborative Evaluation (VACE) team which is focused on conducting collaborative program evaluations with VA clinical and operational partners. These evaluation findings have led to policy changes and clinical program improvement within VA. He serves in several leadership positions on national cardiology organizations for the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology.

Personalized Patient data and behavioral nudges to improve adherence to chronic cardiovascular medications
Given the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases that require ongoing treatment with medications, the problem of medication non-adherence is unlikely to go away and will grow.
This study will employ population-level pharmacy data to identify non-adherent patients and utilize ubiquitous cell phone technology to send them tailored, engaging, and motivating text messages and text message-based chat through an artificially intelligent (AI) interactive chatbot to improve cardiac medication adherence and patient outcomes in 3 integrated healthcare delivery systems.
This study will advance medication adherence research. The intervention could be applied to multiple clinical conditions requiring medications for long-term treatment at other NIH institutes.

Appropriate Use of Cardiovascular Procedures to Optimize Healthcare Value
Enhancing value by achieving optimal patient outcomes at lower total care costs represents an overarching goal for healthcare delivery. One potential contributor to low-value care is using diagnostic tests and procedures among patients without anticipated procedural benefits. According to the Appropriate Use Criteria, inappropriate use is the use of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which result in unnecessary clinical risks and healthcare costs.
Little data is available on the extent of inappropriate use of healthcare in the VA. Our work will determine the size and impact of inappropriate use of cardiac procedures on healthcare value among patients with stable coronary artery disease, a common and high-cost clinical problem.
Further, we will conduct qualitative research to identify best practices for appropriate procedural use and high-value healthcare. The findings of our proposal inform strategies to reduce costs of care while maintaining optimal patient outcomes in high-utilization, high-cost care delivery.

Value-Based Care to Improve the Quadruple Aim for Veterans and Stakeholders
Role: Co-PI with Joe Frank PI is Catherine Battaglia
The Quadruple Aim Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) aims to improve the care and experience for Veterans, clinician engagement, and reduce the cost of care. We will improve care coordination between Veterans Health Administration (VA) and community settings for Veterans using three evidence-based practices rooted in care coordination models to achieve consistently safe, efficient, and effective care for Veterans who are:
1) referred to home health care after discharge from VA,
2) receiving medication treatment for Opioid Use Disorders in the community, and
3) hospitalized or receiving emergency care in the community and return to VA or VA-assigned community PCP for ongoing care.
Veterans with complex medical and social needs will be case managed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely access to care and linkage to resources. The Quadruple Aim QUERI will improve health with optimal patient and clinician experience at a lower cost.

Special Projects
Veteran Access Research Consortium (VARC)
The overall goal is to leverage the learning healthcare system (LHS) framework to accelerate access-related health systems research and build a community of researchers with the goal of improving access to care for Veterans. The CORE will create four cross-cutting workgroups: 1) portfolio review; 2) metrics; 3) research community; and 4) stakeholder engagement. The workgroups will align to develop an access research roadmap and identify high priority access research questions for potential funding by HSR and/or operational partners.
VA Collaborative Evaluation Center (VACE)
A highly collaborative VA “virtual center” composed of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods evaluation experts.
Evaluate implementation of VA initiatives to assess effectiveness and barriers and facilitators to implementation, as well as unintended consequences.
Work collaboratively with operational partners to ensure evaluation outcomes are relevant and useful for program improvements and sustainability.

Introduction to the HSR Veterans Access Research Consortium (VARC)
by Michael Ho, MD, PhD ; Peter Kaboli, MD, MS, FACP, FHM ; Sameer Saini, MD ; Stephanie Shimada, PhD
Seminar date: 2/19/2020
Description: This Cyberseminar will introduce the audience to the Consortium’s purpose, structure, and proposed milestones. Each VARC workgroup will describe their planned work. VARC members will also introduce an upcoming survey to be administered to VA access researchers as well as present a plan for communication, consultation, and collaboration between access researchers, the VARC, and operational partners. Intended Audience: Researchers and operational partners interested in Veterans' access to care.
