Research Interests

Dr. O’Hare is a nephrologist and health systems researcher who is a staff physician at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, and Affiliate Investigator at Kaiser Permanente Research Institute. Her major clinical and research interest is in the care of older adults with chronic kidney disease. She is a former recipient of a VA HSR career development award and a Beeson Career Development Award from the NIA. She currently serves as a PI on a VA IIR focused on the impact of VA community care policy on outcomes among veterans with advanced kidney disease. She is also a co-investigator on an NIDDK contract for the United States Renal Data System, a national registry for end-stage kidney disease. She lives in Seattle with her husband, two teenage children and poorly trained labradoodle (Bubba O’Hare).

Optimizing the value of community care for Veterans with advanced kidney disease

We propose a mixed methods study to evaluate the impact of VA-financed community care for Veterans with advanced kidney disease. And to identify subgroups within this population most likely to benefit and be harmed by the receipt of nephrology care in the community.
These patients comprise a high-cost, high-needs segment of the Veteran population facing a critical health and care transition (onset of end-stage renal disease).
The work we propose is highly relevant to the VA mission (it will directly address three VA HSR priority areas), timely (the VA MISSION Act recently received strong bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate), and will directly inform evolving VA policy around the provision of community care for Veterans.
