Dr. Fan is a pulmonologist and health services researcher whose work focuses on developing interventions to help people with chronic obstructive disease and other chronic illnesses manage their conditions at home, and to develop programs to help patients remain physically active. He has examined self-management interventions for COPD, and studied the effect of depression and anxiety on self-care in COPD. He has used new health care technologies and mHealth to deliver self-management education for COPD and for telemonitoring.

His current research focuses how to improve access to care for patients who develop acute exacerbations of COPD. He is also examining the effect of air pollution on development of early lung disease, as well as the contribution of air pollution to causing COPD exacerbations. Dr. Fan is Associate Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor of Health Services at the University of Washington. Dr. Fan received his MD form the University of Minnesota and MPH in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the University of Washington.
