My research focuses on precision medicine applied to the prevention and treatment of obesity, diabetes, and their complications, particularly cardiovascular disease. I am interested in how electronic health record data and genetic data can guide individualized tailoring of preventive interventions to reduce obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease as well as optimal personalized pharmacotherapy.
Cardiometabolic diseases – obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease – affect large proportions of our population and are particularly prevalent in Veterans. Despite impacting a diverse population, treatment recommendations largely focus on one-size-fits-all approaches to diabetes prevention and care. I’m hopeful that we can add evidence to support a more individualized approach to treating Veterans affected by any of these conditions.
The potential impact of our work will be to update how clinicians estimate risk of diabetes and diabetes complications for Veterans, how we use that estimated risk to tailor treatment, and how we use clinical and genetic data to select treatments for diabetes prevention and care that maximize benefit and minimize harm.

Podcast: What does height have to do with disease risk

On this episode of Health Findings in Focus our Investigator Dr. Sridharan Raghavan talks about his recent paper, “A multi-population phenome-wide association study of genetically-predicted height in the Million Veteran Program”. The paper draws on data from the VA Million Veteran Program, which is a national research program to learn how genes, lifestyle, and military exposures affect health and illness. Listen to learn how height might play a role in certain diseases and what this research means.
