Using Iterative RE-AIM to Guide Adaptations
In addition to planned adaptations you make before you start to use a program, you often need to make changes to the program and its delivery method while it is being used. These adaptations can also be planned. A method you can use to guide adaptations while using the program is outlined below:
- Step 1
- Conduct mid-course evaluations on how things are going for your program implementation. You might want to review your process and impact outcomes as a team every 6 months and decide which of the process or impact outcomes are most relevant in the given stage of the program implementation. You also want to discuss how happy you are with the progress you are making for the various process and impact outcomes. It is important to engage all members of your team who have different perspectives on how the program implementation is going.

- Step 2
- Decide as a team which process or impact outcomes you would like to do better at in this stage of the program implementation. Generally, one or two areas will be realistic to work on.
- Step 3
- Develop an action plan to make changes to your program and its delivery to improve the chosen areas. Make sure these plans are SMART - Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

- Step 4
- Follow up with your team on progress on implementing your SMART goals and whether the progress is desirable
- Step 5
- Document changes you made to the program and its delivery

This concludes the Implementation phase. The next will be the Sustainment Phase. You can return to the Pre-Implementation phase.
