Our Qualitative Research Core comprises ten doctoral-level methodologists, ten master’s-level qualitative team lead/analysts, and 35 trained staff trained in qualitative data collection. Since 2020, the core has conducted interviews with more than 4,260 Veterans, caregivers, VHA providers, and other stakeholders across 67 projects. The primary aim of the core is to provide a robust environment for conducting high-quality, rigorous qualitative research by supporting and advancing the use of qualitative methods and growing qualitative skillsets among COIN investigators and staff. This includes mentoring early-stage investigators, reviewing qualitative data collection materials, and providing guidance on qualitative analyses and dissemination. The core also offers ongoing training for staff, fellows, and investigators to support a diverse qualitative and mixed-method research and evaluation portfolio.
The Qualitative Core Directors are integrated into the Research Review Committee process to ensure rigorous and sound qualitative practices across COIN projects. They also ensure that the Qualitative Core contributes to the COIN’s overall impact, strategic vision, and future direction by proposing innovative and nimble qualitative and mixed methods approaches appropriate for the research and evaluation questions. They achieve this aim by:
- Conducting needs assessments and collaborating to develop and deploy cross-site training and professional development opportunities.
- Leading twice monthly consultation groups, which are open to all staff and investigators, including fellows and early-stage investigators.
- Working with Qualitative Core staff to manage qualitative software licenses and recording equipment and oversee transcription contracts based in Seattle and Denver.
- Support CDA awardees and trainees conducting small qualitative analyses as part of developmental pilot projects.
